1. to put sth off

= to delay an event until a later time or date

Synonyms: to postpone sth

We will have to put off the meeting until next Monday as John is unwell today.

2. to cut sth up

= to cut sth into (small) pieces

First, take the meat and cut it up into small cubes.

3. to sort sth out

= to deal with or resolve a problem in a successful way

Synonyms: to resolve sth, to deal with sth

4. to take after sb

= to be similar to an older member of your family in appearance or character

Synonyms: to resemble sb, to look like sb

I take after my father in the sense that we're both very tidy and meticulous.

5. to cut sth out

= to stop eating or drinking something completely, usually to improve your health

Synonyms: to quit/stop eating/drinking sth

My doctor told me I had to cut out soft drinks and alcohol from my diet.

6. to make up (with sb)

= to forgive someone and be friendly with them again after an argument or fight. 'Make up' doesn't necessarily imply the speaker or the other person made the mistake or is to blame. Instead, it focuses more on the process or activity of forgiving each other so that both people can be friends again.

Because it is your fault, you should make up with him as soon as possible.

7. to bring sth out

= to produce something to sell to the public. The synonyms can vary depending on the type of product being sold. See synonyms below.

Synonyms: to publish a magazine, to launch/release a new iPhone (tech), to air a television show, to screen a movie

The trend was to create smaller phones, but now they keep bringing out bigger and bigger ones.

8. to call sth off

= to decide that an event, usually a sports event or concert, will not happen

Synonyms: to cancel sth

They had to call off the match because of the rain.
