1. to do without sb/sth
= to manage without having something or somebody
Synonyms: to think of sth, to devise sth
As we are letting go of some staff, I believe we can do without some of the furniture.
The new director is extremely busy so he cannot do without his personal assistant.
2. to make sth up
= to invent a story or excuse, or other types of information, often in order to trick or entertain someone
Sometimes it's useful to make things up when writing your CV.
'The dog eating your homework' is one of the worst excuses you have made up.
3. to look out for sb/sth
= to try and notice or find someone or something
Synonyms: to watch out for sb/sth
When you leave the airport, look out for the blue taxis. They're the most honest.
In the summer there are some great sales. Just look out for the big red sign that says 'rebajas'.
4. to fall into sth
= to start doing something that you had not planned or intended to do
It was never my intention to be a teacher. I just kind of fell into it while I was between jobs.
Unfortunately, we've fallen into a terrible habit of ordering takeaway 3 times a week.
5. to get at sth
= to reach, obtain or access something, especially something that is difficult to get

6. to bring sth up
= to mention or start to talk about a particular subject

Don't forget to bring up the missing stationery at the next meeting.
I find it so irritating how she keeps bringing up her baby every time we have a conversation.
7. to go under
= to say that a company has failed financially and it has stopped doing business
Synonyms: to go bankrupt
Unfortunately, due to recession and closed borders, the company went under in June.
If we don't find investors quick, we risk going under next month.
8. to wear sb out
= to make someone or yourself feel extremely tired
Going from museum to museum all day long is really wearing me out.
The babysitter fell asleep as the three hyperactive children had been wearing her out all afternoon.
