ANSWERS and further information:


1. to go without (sb/sth)

= to manage or survive without something you usually have

It looks like we have run out of coffee so we'll have to go without it.

2. to walk away

= to leave or no longer be involved in a situation that is difficult. Often used 'to walk away from a particular situation', to make it clear what the difficult situation is.

If things get really stressful, it is ok to walk away and take time to think about it.

3. to bring sth back

= to return somebody or something

I'm not sure if this new TV is working. Can you bring it back to the store?

4. to keep sth to oneself

= to keep something a secret, or not to tell someone something, like a secret

I would really appreciate it if you could keep this secret to yourself.

5. to set sth up

= to formally create a new company or organisation

Synonyms: to establish sth, to start sth, to found sth, to create sth

Mr Smith set up a charity to help the children receive clean water, shelter and food.

6. to take sb down / to take sb out

= a very informal way of saying to kill someone or destroy something

Synonyms: to kill sb, to destroy sth

The police captain ordered the sniper to take the suspect down.

7. to turn (sb/sth) into sb/sth

= to become somebody or something else, or to transform from one thing to another thing

Synonyms: to transform (sth) into sth, to change sth (into) sth

Many of the beautiful old homes in the area have turned into dull concrete apartment blocks.

8. to look down on sb

= to act or behave in a way that makes it seem like you are better than somebody

My colleagues look down on me all the time just because I'm the youngest in the office.
