1. to black out

= to lose consciousness or become unconscious for a short period of time

10 seconds into the roller coaster ride, David blacked out and missed the rest of the ride.

2. to close up

= to shut or close a shop or building by locking the doors for a short period of time. This is typically used at the end of the day when the business closes. We assume that it will reopen the next morning. Often this is a responsibility or duty of a shop worker who is responsible for closing the store on a particular work day.

3. to do sth up

= to close the buttons or zippers on an item of clothing (e.g. shirt, jacket, coat, pants, trousers, belt and shoe laces) because it is open. This may be used in response to the weather being cold, or in an embarrassing moment when someone's zipper is open.

Synonym: to fasten sth

You might want to do up your jacket. It's quite chilly outside today.

4. to get sth across

= to make someone understand or believe what you are trying to say

Synonym: to communicate sth to sb

It's very difficult to get your message across to someone who is very sleepy.

5. to keep up

= to move at the same speed as someone or something else. This movement can be progress, an increase in something, your walking or running speed, or the speed at which you are driving a vehicle.

Synonym: to maintain sth (e.g. speed)

Please try and keep up. We're going to miss the train.

6. to pay sb/sth back

= to return the money you borrowed from someone or something (e.g. the bank), or to pay someone what you owe them.

Synonym: to repay sb

Thanks for the money. I promise I'll pay you back next week.

7. to spread out

= to go from being close together with someone or something to being far apart from each other, typically in order to be able to cover a larger area (if you are looking for someone or something)

It's a very large forest so we will need to spread out if we want to find the lost hikers.

8. to warm up

= to prepare for a sporting event or physical exercise by doing gentle exercises such as stretching your muscles or doing a light job. This is often done to help avoid injury during the sporting event.

Make sure you warm up before the race so you don't injure yourself.
